A 'Crepes & Tacos' Kind of Weekend
Tuesday, July 30, 2013The best times seem to be the transition period between Ben's rotations because it means he gets the weekend off! I'm guilty of trying to figure out lots of things to do that can make the weekend more than just any other weekend. Nevertheless, I'm also capable of planning much more laid-back weekends to get him recharged for the next week! Unlike this weekend (which I'm about to write about and was loads of fun!), next week will most likely be a LAN party in which I prepare all the snacks. I think most guys would agree with this arrangement? More about that later!
So this weekend marked Ben's switching from cardio surg at TDC to general. Still on call but at least he'll be on a team! We decided to celebrate with a simple dinner, cupcakes, and the del Toro's 'Pacific Rim' (a title Ben insists implies something a little more R-rated.) Last time we were at the theater, we ordered appetizers and a huge bucket of popcorn. This time, just a Kahlua Mudslide to be shared between the two of us. I think I can still cross off my 'share a milkshake' despite it being an adult milkshake, right?
The salted caramel cupcakes I'm fond of (second only to coconut cupcakes!) weren't as delicious as I remember them being at SWEET. Is it quality control? Also tried a smore macaroon which seemed more like a chocolate macaroon than anything else. It was also Ben's first time trying a red velvet cupcake but there were no declarations of new-found love for this flavor. Which is not to say that the desserts were bad, just that we have higher expectations now... that's sounds a bit silly, doesn't it.
The last couple of weeks at TDC were tiring so Ben's idea of de-stressing was to eat our favorite empanadas from Argentina Cafe and find a near by go-kart track. I was terrified for some reason but went along with it. Despite staying firmly in last place of all the other drivers, the experience was worth it! And before anyone wonders, Ben did of course lap me on the track. Boys!
We stopped by Rice Village the day after because I had a sudden craving for dessert crepes from Sweet Paris. I'm not too fond of their savory crepes (I think Coco's crepes taste better) but definitely adore the sweet crepes. I would've liked to try out the crepe food truck but we thought it would be nice to walk around the area there as well. We have yet to check out the food truck park but there are plenty of weekends in our future to try them out.
There was a sale going on at Banana Republic and I walked away with a button-up and shorts. Ben tried on these yellow chinos but the size they had was too big for him. Maybe next time! We planned on hitting up Coreano's around five but I spotted Torchy's Tacos across the street and had to drag Ben over there. When we were at Austin last year, we didn't have a chance to try anything there so here was a chance to make up for it. Part of the line was outside so we had to bear with the heat for a bit! I thought the doorknobs were cool and cajoled Ben into taking this cheesy photo of me. Not to be deterred, I got Ben to hold still for a photo under these big lights.
I wish I could have fit the whole 'DAMN GOOD' lights above Ben's head but the last word will have to do. The tacos and sweet corn were delicious, but I would've liked the place to smell less like a dirty old rag. The place gets packed pretty easily so maybe next time it would be better to eat outside. The food was good though!
Ben picked up some tips about interesting eateries around his apartment so maybe in the coming weeks, we can check them out. I'll be sure to write about them here. Next post will be about what snacks I'm going to prepare for this weekend! Get excited!
