Canada, the First Day

Friday, May 15, 2009

I woke up at 4:30 a.m. to catch what turned out to be an 8:40 a.m. flight. I don't actually think I needed to wake up that early but that's what happens when you encounter the abrupt changes of plane schedules. I learned several things on the trip to Canada. First, check-in online, it saves you time. Second, don't use a rental car from Budget because the null and void your previous CHEAPER purchase and make you pay your weight in cash PER DAY for a car. Third, buy the mini versions of such things as Listerine and Contact solution...because you need it.

Also, I made a vow to take as many pictures as possibles, in order to find the right scenes, angles, that It-factor.

I'm not sure why I'm so fond of taking reflection pictures but 001 marks waiting at the terminal for the departure flight. I ended up spending most of my time in the bookstore, hence 002 and 003, but I did manage to tear myself away to eat a cinnamon twist from the neighboring cafe. 004 just goes to show you that no matter how classy/unclassy the plane ride is, the airplane food won't get any better than this. The corn flakes would've been nice but since they weren't equipped with soymilk (and I left my lactose enzyme pills in my suitcase) I was left with half a banana and half a banana muffin. Too much banana = too much potassium = too much time on The Can.

Which is why I only ate half and half. Yay me.

Although there was a lot of traveling to be had, I feel like I spent the majority of the day eating. We grabbed a quick bite to eat at Denny's. And by quick bite I mean a monstrous super grand slamwich. With pancake puppies (hold the puppies, it's just donut cake holes rolled in cinnamon sugar). And a big glass of raspberry tea.

Next was a two hour drive to the border. Getting asked questions by the patrol guard:
  • Did you bring your guns? ("...No...?")
  • Any mace or pepper spray? ("...uh...No...?")
  • Any presents for the wedding? ("Oh!...uh...No.")
And another two hour drive to the ferry, the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, to be exact. I'm pretty sure I passed a dozen streets with difficult pronounciations, but it's interesting trying to read the words aloud without sounding like a complete idiot.
At the ferry, I was still stuffed from Denny's but did manage to swallow some Red Clam Chowder and the majority of a cinnamon bun. The before and after pictures, 005 and 006, can attest to how the food fared in the end. But now I'm sitting in our hotel, freezing a bit, and staying awake to complete this entry. Not much plans but to have brunch with some relatives. Maybe it will be a good day for more pictures?
