A Big Step
Thursday, May 19, 2011I don't know where to begin. It was Wednesday, May 18. I went out to the premium outlet stores with Stephanie and Jamie to buy clothes for Las Vegas. I got a smashing dress, pretty sweet bikinis (two of them!), a coach wallet to keep the cash on hand, and a cute pair of sandals from aldo. I was riding a high from the new purchases, plus envisioning myself walking doing the strip and arm in arm with Connie, Hao, and Eddie. Little did I know, a pretty important email was sitting in my inbox that morning.
Fast forward to Wednesday evening. I finally sit down at my laptop to check my email. I notice one from UNTHSC, and my first thought is oh, they're finally emailing me. It's so late, I don't feel like reading a rejection letter right now. But I went ahead and opened it. Let me just say, the words Congratulations! sort of threw me for a loop. I think I sat there, rereading that email a good dozen times. My mother was sitting downstairs watching television, my dad was at home, and I was sitting in my room slowly growing crazy.
I started the application for the Master of Science program in Medical Sciences in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at University of North Texas Health Science Center (boy isn't that a long phrase? geez) a long time ago. But I never completed it, at least not until I was reminded by it from Eddie's suggestion. His staunch belief that I would get in felt entirely misplaced on my part, and I don't really remember why I went through with submitting it. Last ditch effort?
Well it paid off. I remember sitting there wondering what this all meant. I thought this chapter had closed. Medical school was no longer an option. I had accepted that. I thought it was for the best, that I should look forward. And then the biggest monkey wrench comes in, saying NO to Las Vegas, and PACK YOUR BAGS YOU'RE MOVING TO FORT WORTH IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS.
It was a shock. I'm still in shock.
I just came back from the doctors. Did a physical, tetanus shot, and drew titres for the school. I have to take a TB test at their facilities and I completely forgot to tell the clinic to fax it to the student health clinic at Fort Worth. It's going to be done tomorrow, promise! I'll be finding an apartment in Fort Worth. I'll be living on my own, who would've thought it? It's so crazy. I'm almost entirely sure this post is coming off as a raving, but I haven't had enough time to settle down. I've barely been home for a week! And now I have to re-pack. I have to find an apartment. I missed all the dates to get my lab coat, so I don't even know what to do about that. I don't have textbooks. It's all very overwhelming.
I wanted to go to Las Vegas but maybe next summer? No, it will be next summer. Just need to convince Connie, Hao, and Eddie that it needs to happen! Well, my arms feel like dead-weights right now—
—did I mention I almost vomited and fainted at the clinic when they drew blood? It's a combination of my slim build (120 lbs geez what happened to me) and propensity to faint? I don't know but it was not enjoyable. What does that mean for me in the future?! But I won't think about it too much...—
so I'll call this post to a quick end! More coherency later!
