One Last Hurrah, Post-White Coat

Sunday, May 15, 2016

It's the last week of exams before rotations start at the end of the month. Dredging up the necessary energy to stay focused has been quite a struggle. Times like these, I look for a little inspiration and Randy Pausch came to mind. He said our passion must come from the things that fuel us from the inside. Too often am I focused on the finish line in front of me that I forget to stop and think about what it's taken to reach this point. Pausing and remembering the last year, maybe even the last 3 years, really helps dampen the restlessness that keeps distracting me from studying for finals.

Of course, writing a quick post here is its own distraction but a small update seemed warranted. In my last post, I posted two dresses that I was choosing between for white coat. Ended up scrapping both dresses (read: returned them) and went with a pencil skirt and white blouse. I took a few photos but the majority had to be borrowed from my dad's cell phone.

I made reservations for dinner at GT Fish and Oyster later that evening. Since we didn't want to deal with traffic, we arrived at the city a little earlier. To kill some time, I took my parents to one of my favorite places in the city, Eataly. We enjoyed some gelato as we walked around. Also picked up several wine bottles for parents and their friends.

I was going to wear what I wore to white coat for the city dinner but the weather had become a little too chilly for that. Even though it was a missed opportunity, I'm sure I will get a lot of wear out of it during rotations. I also purchased two other skirts with that skirt (Ann Taylor was doing a 50% sale!). I'm sure they, along with my Banana Republic Sloan pants, will get a lot of wear for my clinical rotations. Now I just need to make sure I have enough blouses to go along with everything.

I haven't had a chance to organize my closet as well as I'd like since I moved into the city (!). I want to explore the public transit and in general, walk around my area but opportunities have been few and far in between. There's going to be another 'booze cruise' on the last day of finals which is going to be a great way to conclude the week. I'll have to pack a suitcase the next morning since I'm flying out to BTR. It will be nice to spend a couple of days with Ben before rotations steal me away. He'll be busy as a second year in his residency so hopefully we can both find ways to keep in touch despite overloaded schedules.

There's probably going to be another post about fears and hopes for the coming months. Acknowledging that we know something is a start, but the real labor will be honing our base knowledge and building up. I have some tentative ideas on where to begin but the first step is always the hardest! I suppose I've dithered enough and need to get back to studying. Cheers.
