Being Social

Like I mentioned before, I heard of 'Meetups' from a co-worker who has been to several meet-ups in the past. After multiple guarantees that she never ran into suspicious individuals, I decided to take the plunge and sign up. The first meet-up was actually in a few days so I signed on to 'Board Games' meet-up. The turnout? About 20 people showed up and it went swimmingly. The people that showed up were from a range of ages. I'm not completely sure but I may be one of the youngest there. There were a couple of research fellows there too (makes sense) and the second meetup I went to (was last night!), I found out about a mutual acquaintance!

Anyway, my first meet-up: It was a Friday night and I was able to parallel park somewhat close the the location. By the time I walked inside the cafe, the tables were all full! I had a fun (read: difficult) time trying to recognize faces from the thumbnails I saw on the website but no such luck. I must have portrayed 'very lost' well enough because two women approached me mouthing the words 'meet-up?' Yes!

Everyone had ordered beers or a glass of wine by the time I was perusing the menu. I wasn't in the mood to drink that night so I settled for warm pita bread and hummus plus a mango ice tea. Delicious! We began the night with a long round of taboo before moving onto Cards Against Humanity. With that many people, it was easy to forget the flow of time. We all wrapped up our fun at the closing time (midnight) and I walked away feeling pretty proud about this adventure.

Last night was another meet-up I decided to head to. It was at a bar/restaurant just two blocks from apartment. Trivia Night! I was kind of worried about how useful I would be to my team but there was nothing to worry about, it was super casual. The only questions I could help my team out on:

1) What language does RSVP come from?
2) Newton's second law states mass times acceleration equals?
3) Oldest branch of military is?
4) Michael Jordan's number on Chicago Bulls? (credit goes 100% to Ben for instilling this info into my head!)

Two of my teammates each ordered a round of shots so I think we were all satisfied with the end (our team, Purple Haze, got third place.) The night concluded at a more reasonable time (according to Ben) and I was compelled to attend another trivia night—tonight.

Hopefully it's just as enjoyable as yesterday night? Fingers crossed!
