The Uniform Project
Saturday, July 18, 2009I didn't do much today but study for physics and get my rusty bike from my old house and fix it up. A tire burst so a quick trip to Wal-mart solved the problem. I'll be biking with my dad tomorrow morning, 8-ish I suppose. It'll be just like the old times!
But it won't be for long since I plan on meeting some old friends (read: from middle school and high school) in the afternoon. One of them turned 21 on Tuesday so we need to properly celebrate. I hope she likes my birthday present (personalized sneakers, hand-decorated by me!).
Anyway, I happened on some interesting things while I was taking a break from code hacking. For one thing, anyone heard of the Uniform Project? This woman, Sheena Matheiken, is accomplishing two things. First, she wears the same black dress (more like 7 identical dresses for each day of the week) for one year, as a sort of exercise in sustainable fashion. She just reinvents the outfit by layering, adding accessories, etc. Most of what she adds to the black dress are vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies.
But more than coming up with an intriguing idea, Sheena Matheiken is raising money for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. More information can be found on the link I provided.
I guess that 'little black dress' goes a long way with a little imagination.
